Chapter Twelve
Friday morning dawned sunny and warm; all in all, a perfect day for delivering plants and doing some landscaping. Connor was up and in the greenhouse before six. He moved quickly and with a light step.
Glancing through the two orders he was to fulfill, he organized his day. First, he gathered up the various flats and hanging baskets, setting out a small variety for Ray while also keeping careful track of the inventory so that no one could possibly accuse him of stealing.
Once he got the flowers loaded, he drove the gator out to the bush area where he proceeded to load a variety that would go to the garden centers. He also selected three that would go to Ray. He ended the excursion by loading fifteen ornamentals onto the truck, including two for Ray.
Back at the barn, he inspected the load three times. He knew he was carrying more than he normally did and that he would need to be careful. Just to make certain, he even had McGraw check it with him, making sure that the older man didn't see the extras Connor was saving for Ray.
By noon, Connor was ready to roll. He said good-bye to McGraw, climbed up into the cab, and took off. As he steered the big truck out of the barn, his heart was pounding and he could feel the beginning of a headache. His plan was to deliver the inventory to the two garden centers as quickly as he could, then make it to Ray's house by two. He thought that if everything went right, he could be back at Lindstroms by five thirty. And if anyone asked what took him so long, he would just say the garden centers held him up.
But he didn't think anyone would question him. Why would they?
His plan worked better than he expected. He pulled the truck into Ray's driveway at ten minutes before two. She was waiting for him with a big smile on her pretty face. She was wearing a short white dress.
He dismounted. "Dr. Harris, I've got your delivery. Shall I unload?"
She waved him to the front door. "Let's settle up first," she said.
She opened the door and ushered him into the familiar foyer. Once they were inside, she stood back and appraised him. Her eyes widened along with her smile. "Wow," she said, "I do believe hard physical work has done wonders for you."
He returned her smile, feeling good about the compliment and knowing it was mostly true. He had noted the transformation himself - the increase in chest diameter, the new bulges in his biceps, the flattening of his abs. He almost laughed thinking that many men spent months at a gym in order to accomplish what he had in six weeks.
She took his hand and nodded. "A lot rougher than it was," she said. "But not in a bad way." She sniffed his skin. "Honest sweat," she declared. "A man's smell. I like it... a lot." She tightened her grip on his hand and looked into his eyes.
